Painting the mood!
During my early education, I was privileged to have an excellent teacher. She specialized in watercolors but had extensive knowledge of all media as well as basic drawing and design skills. I studied under her for four years and received an art scholarship to continue my studies. Initially, I focused on painting in oil and took workshops from several professional artists in the area. While enjoying some success as an artist, I pursued and received an Associate of Arts degree with a focus on Metal Smithing--thinking that a more practical fine arts career as a jeweler might be more lucritive. I spent a few years working as an apprentice jeweler. Family responsibilities necessitated better, more stable income and benefits so I left the world of art for a number of years. I returned to school and received a BS in Computer Science. I worked the next 25 years in the Aerospace Industry as a Satellite Software Engineer. In 2004 I retired and immediately resumed my heart's desire, painting. The media I use most frequently now is watercolor or acrylics; however, I also paint in oil and pastel and sometime will do a series in collage just focusing on design elements. I have taken many classes at our local junior college, adult education and through various Art Leagues. I am a keen supporter of workshops taught by successful professional artists and have gained invaluable information from these workshops as well as made new friends and supporters. I continue to submit work to juried and membership shows within the U.S. I am a member of the Santa Cruz Art League, the California Watercolor Association and the Santa Clara Watercolor Society and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.
I paint primarily from photographs in my studio. I enjoy the quiet of my studio or the studio filled with soft background music. Figures, non-objective abstracts and landscapes are my favorite subjects. I continue to learn and grow with each painting. It has been said of me that "I am a poetic painter." I focus on capturing a mood; telling a story; sharing a special place with you, the viewer.
