Painting the mood!
During my early education, I was privileged to have an excellent teacher. She specialized in watercolors but had extensive knowledge of all media as well as basic drawing and design skills. I studied under her for four years and received an art scholarship to continue my studies. Initially, I focused on painting in oil and took workshops from several professional artists in the area. While enjoying some success as an artist, I received an Associate of Arts degree with a focus on Metal Smithing. I spent a few years working as an apprentice jeweler. Family responsibilities necessitated better, more stable income and benefits so I left the world of art for a number of years. I returned to school and received a BS in Computer Science. I worked the next 25 years in the Aerospace Industry as a Satellite Software Engineer. In 2004 I retired and immediately took my paints out of the dusty old box and set up my studio. The media I use most frequently now is watercolor; however, I also paint in oil and pastel. I have taken many classes at our local junior college, adult education and through various Art Leagues. I am a keen supporter of workshops taught by successful professional artists. I have gained invaluable information from these workshops as well as made new friends and supporters. I continue to submit work to juried and membership shows within the U.S. I am a member of the Santa Cruz Art League, the California Watercolor Association and the Santa Clara Watercolor Society.
I paint primarily from photographs in my studio. I enjoy the quiet of my studio or soft music in the background. I particularly like Chinese music and instruments. Landscapes, still lifes and cityscapes are my favorite subjects. I continue to learn and grow with each painting. I love abstraction and what I call impressionistic abstraction where the subject is recognizable albeit not realistic but most often, I focus on capturing a mood; telling a story; sharing a special place with you, the viewer.
